St. Veronica Athletics Overview

Name & Purpose

The name of the organization shall be the Peninsula Parish/School League, henceforth referred to as the PPSL. This league will operate under the auspices and control of The Roman Catholic Welfare Corporation of San Francisco (Archdiocesan Office of Catholic Schools). The purpose of this organization shall be to foster a spirit of cooperation and friendly competition among the Catholic parish/schools of San Mateo County. This program shall strive to enrich our students physically and socially by developing practices of good sportsmanship, encouraging participation, and building self-esteem in all participants.

Local Responsibility

The pastor and principal accept responsibility and maintain supervision over all teams in the parish. Each year, they will appoint an athletic director (or designate a representative for each sport) to act as a liaison between the school and the league and to serve as a voting member at PPSL general league meetings.

Philosophy

Saint Veronica Catholic School/Parish Sports Program is based on the philosophy; each child is unique with unique needs and concerns. At St. Veronica the emphasis in sports is placed on development of the child's skills (socially and physically). This necessitates teaching the children sportsmanship, healthy competitive spirit, teamwork, commitment, and plain fun. The Athletic Directors and Coaches who are chosen must adhere to this Catholic philosophy of sports. Further, all children regardless of abilities, have an equal opportunity to participate in our sports program.

Priority

Students who participate in St. Veronica's Sports Program must make their commitment to St. Veronica team a #1 priority. This priority means that practices, games, meetings regarding sports must come first before all other activities, i.e. club teams, city teams, Boy's and Girl's Club, etc.

In addition, it is currently a PPSL rule that any participant who drops from the team after the deadline date will not be allowed to participate in the same sport the following season.

Program

Children attending St. Veronica School or The Religious Education Program are given the opportunity to participate in athletic programs as an extra-curricular activity. League play in these programs is controlled by the PPSL.

The Athletic Programs available are:

Boys: 4th grade – Baseball & Basketball – instructional play only, scores are not kept, teams are split equally by ability; 5th through 8th grades – Baseball, Basketball and Track.

Girls: 4th grade – Volleyball & Basketball – instructional play only, scores are not kept and teams are split equally by ability, 5th through 8th grades – Volleyball, Basketball and Track; 8th grade cheerleading.

PARISH/SCHOOL RULES
  • League rules and regulations are kept in a binder located in the school/parish office.
  • These school/parish rules shall take precedence over the league rules.
  • If a student is absent on Friday, there can be no participation in any sport during that weekend.
  • Absences on any given day during the school week will disallow participation of a sport or a school activity as a player or spectator on that day.
  • A "3" or below average on a report card in conduct or effort means a suspension from after school activities as a player or spectator for at least 3 weeks.
  • Suspension from school is a suspension from after school activities.
  • Coaches will notify parents in writing or during a parents' meeting about each sport before that particular sport begins.
  • After two (2) unexcused absences from practices and/or games, it will be the coach's discretion as to the actual playing time of that child.
  • For the sports of basketball and volleyball, it is suggested if there is a large number of players for one team that it shall be the athletic directors' decisions to split the players into more than one team. This split, therefore, will give players the chance to enhance their abilities and improve their skills.
  • The criteria for splitting the teams will be as follows. Coaches (and possibly coaches from other schools and other sports programs) will evaluate and choose players. They will be chosen by ability first; if two players have equal ability, the participation and attitude of each should be considered. Any conflicts of this process will go to the Commissioner and/or Athletic Director to resolve any problems.
  • For the sport of basketball, each player must play one full quarter during a game. (This applies to both tournament and league play).
  • For the sport of baseball, each player must play two full consecutive innings.
  • A child will not be allowed to participate in any practice or game until the Athletic Director receives, the fee and permission slip for the corresponding sport. In addition, the annual men's club fee must be current.
  • All the above rules are based upon the pastor and principal's final decision. Individual cases should be brought to the coaches first, then to the Commissioners, then to the Athletic Directors, and finally to the pastor and principal's attention.
Awards

An award system has been established to encourage children to participate in athletic activities. Children may earn points by successfully participating in a sport all season. Each child is expected to attend and participate in all practices and in all games. 15 points are earned for participation in a sport. A child who earns 90 points will be awarded a St. Veronica Sports Pin.

Equipment

Athletic equipment required for each sport will be discussed at the meetings with parents and coaches before each season. Safety equipment will be necessary for each sport. It is mandatory that knee pads be worn for volleyball.

Uniforms

Game uniforms will be loaned to each child who participates in a sport. Persons unable to come on the appointed day should arrange to have someone else pick up their uniforms. At the end of league play, a uniform return day will be set and the uniforms will be turned into school. Uniforms are to be returned clean, and in good condition. If they are not returned, or are returned in poor condition, a bill of $100.00 will be sent out for the cost of the new uniform and the child will not be able to participate in the next sport for which he/she signs up. Game uniforms are for games only and are not to be used for practice under any circumstances. Boys participating in baseball will be required to purchase their hat and socks.

Fees

There is a mandatory annual membership fee of $60.00 for the Men's Club. In addition, a fee will be charged for each program in which a child participates. The Men's Club sets the amounts of the fees during the regularly scheduled meetings.
